Privacy Policy

What we collect, and what we don't.

Last updated: 1 January 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how The Spelling Bee ("we", "us", or "the site") handles information when you play our word games at thespellingbee.org. We've kept it short and plain, because our approach to your data is simple: we collect as little as possible.

The short version

  • You don't need an account to play, and we don't ask for your name, email, or any personal details to use the game.
  • Your game progress, statistics, and theme preference are saved locally in your browser, not on our servers.
  • We don't sell or share personal information, because we don't collect it.

Information we do not collect

Playing the daily puzzle, unlimited mode, or the solver does not require you to register, sign in, or provide any personal information. We do not build user profiles and we have no login system.

Data stored on your device

To make the game work and remember where you left off, we use your browser's local storage, a small amount of space on your own device. This is used to save things like:

  • the words you've found and your score for the current puzzle, so you can close the tab and continue later;
  • your game statistics, such as games played, Genius wins, and the ranks you've reached;
  • your preference for light or dark mode.

This information stays in your browser on your device. It is not transmitted to us, and we cannot read it. You can clear it at any time by clearing your browser's site data, or by using the "Reset statistics" option in the game. Clearing it will erase your saved progress and stats.

Cookies

The Spelling Bee does not use tracking or advertising cookies. Any data we keep is held in local storage as described above, not in cookies used to follow you across the web.

Third-party services

We load web fonts from Google Fonts to display the site's typography. When your browser requests these fonts, Google may receive your IP address as part of that request, as it would for any website that uses the service. Google's handling of that data is governed by its own privacy policy. We do not share any other information with Google, and we do not use these fonts to identify you.

If we add privacy-friendly, aggregate analytics in the future to understand general usage (for example, how many people play the daily puzzle), we will update this policy to describe it. Any such analytics would be used only in aggregate and would not identify individual players.

Children's privacy

The Spelling Bee is a family-friendly word game suitable for all ages. Because we do not collect personal information from anyone, we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has somehow provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will address it.

Links to other sites

The site may link to other websites that we do not operate. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites, and we encourage you to read their privacy policies.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we'll revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be reflected here, so it's worth checking back occasionally.
